The Papal Chambers Empty Re: The Papal Chambers

Post by Ebsotz Sat Dec 12, 2015 1:19 am

Greetings, Pope Leo VII. We come with an important claim and message, representing the people of Polska and Ebsotz.

Recently, both of our nations have drafted an economic agreement/treaty, and one of the amendments includes connecting our borders. The only thing separating our nations is one fief, commonly known as East Saxony. I request, under authority by the Cardinals, that we claim this land for our benefit of economic trade, and for the sake of the treaty drafted by Polska and Ebsotz. We have a copy of the treaty below. Polska is still pending on one amendment, but this does not affect our claim by any means:

Polska & Ebsotz Trade Agreement:

We hope our claim is sufficient enough for approval. As a cardinal myself, I know the obligations necessary to be made for this claim.

OOC: Feel free to move this to map claims if necessary.

Greetings!

In order to gain approval from the Church, you must start a claim and discussion in the Holy See.

AN OPEN LETTER TO CARDINAL LYSANDER AND BISHOP PILO

His Holiness the Pope is summoning Cardinal Lysander and Bishop Pilo to Rome, where His Holiness has certain matters to discuss with them.

There is no excuse for delaying the arrival, except for those days on which celebrations and mass is about to be held.

So ordered, by the Grace of God,

His Holiness the Pope, Leo VII

Cardinal Lysander awaited Bishop Pilo, and would walk in when he arrived. He wore his dark green robes with an golden owl embroidered on the breast. It was a bit extravagant compared to what the cardinal usually wore but If he was forced to leave, he'd do so as a Greek, and as an Athenian.

Bishop Philo had made the journey to Rome at the request of the Pope. Before leaving he had been summoned to Constantinople, where he spoke of his grievances with the other Bithynian bishops. Finding they all agreed, Varius sent him along to Rome.

Now Philo made is way through Rome, wearing his standard attire. Philo, spotting Lysander, made his way over to him.

"It would seem the Pope has learnt of our corrospondance. I would imagine he is not too pleased."

"None among us like having their faults pointed out."
"A tree is know by its fruit; a man by his deeds, no? And we are both just and faithful in our deeds.
Perhaps the Pope will realise this, if not, I pity the Roman church."

"Shall we?" Lysander said walking into Pope Leo's chambers.

When the two summoned members of the Clerus arrived in the Papal Chambers, the two guards closed the door behind them swiftly. On the other side of the room, sitting on a large throne, sat Pope Leo, not wearing his papal garments. He eyed the two for a long time before speaking.

"Blessed be the Lord." - He began speaking, in a clearly annoyed tone. - "I have heard news about how you, along with other eastern bishops, think that the laws of the Church are not to be followed, and are against true faith. Let me remind you, before you explain yourself, that the laws of the Church are approved by the Popes, who are the leaders of the Church, and that the Bishop of Rome is first in order, according to the Donatio Constantini. Now, you may begin your explaination. "

"Explain ourselves? Your Grace, I must ask, Is our privacy no longer sacrosanct?

We can not question our beliefs just as men have throughout the ages?
This entire gathering is abominable. The papacy was never meant to have this much power, we are men of God, why are we not seen as equals? Our concerns should be voiced and considered deeply and truly.

As for the Donatio Constantini, it is suspect to say little, I must agree with the eastern bishops in that regard.
Even if it is not a forgery, the Eastern Roman Empire collapsed, along with the West, it should be seen as void regardless."

Lysander spoke proudly, but he was nervous, would this Pope, a man of God order his death? He didn't know, honestly. It was the unknown that scared him, he wouldn't have even asked himself this question in the past. Lysander looked to Philo, looking for him to add to what he had said.

Philo too was quite nervous, especially after the guards had so quickly closed the doors. Philo too feared that he was not far from death, ordered by the Pope. Still, he would speak his mind, even if that made his fears come true.

"As Lysander said, the papacy has grown too powerful. God speaks to us all, not through only one man. Why should one man be given so much power, when he is no different than his fellow men of faith? Why does the Papacy not spend more of its money on helping those in need? It is taught that we should give our money to the poor, so that we may have treasure in heaven.

Likewise, we should be able to voice our concerns without fear, and our concerns should be given thought. Even if a man's concerns are misguided, they should not be punished for having such concerns. He should not feel threatened that a man, supposedly appointed by God, will punish him. God is kind, and forgiving, and he is our Lord, not any one man."

Philo waited for what would come next, clearly nervous.

"Punished? My good brothers, I have merely summoned you to discuss what troubles your mind. This is not some kind of case in the Holy See where scribes will record all you say.
Have a seat, eat and drink, while I listen to your concerns.

We are equals indeed, but our Lord has entrusted Saint Peter to lead his Church, and the bishop of Rome is his successor.

Now, please, tell me about what our brothers disagree with in the East?

Lysander refused the food and drink, still unweary. The remarks of this meeting not being recorded only made him more so.

"Your Eminence, you have intercepted the letters, no? I'm sure your aides have translated them from their Greek, those letters along with our remarks today are the concerns of the devout of the east."

"They needed not to be translated, Cardinal, I read greek myself as well. I did not order letters of any kind to be watched or read, a messenger of yours copied and sent them on his own to me."

Pope Leo held a bit of a pause, eyeing the two clergymen infront of himself.

"Do they not accept that our Lord has entrusted Saint Peter to lead his church? "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it" Matthew, 16:18." The Pope recited in a calm manner.

Your Grace, you say you have read the letters but you avoid speaking of what they say, it is much more than Saint Peter. The people look to the churches of Constantinople because simply? They see them as churches of the people instead of a church of kings. They believe the Christian message is still pure in the east.

"Brothers." Pope Leo said, while clearly holding himself back while pausing. After a while, he shook his head, and let out a deep sigh.

"Will you not let us discuss this matter peacefully? Must you force the shepherd to use his staff instead of his flute to make you not stray from the herd?! " Clearly furious, the Pope continued.
"NEVER had anyone spit the Church of Jesus Christ in the eye so openly as you did! Not even Arrianus the heretic! Instead of bringing it up in a Council, you plot and scheme in the background!
Tell me, who spread the words of Christ further, to the very end of the World in the North and the West?! ROME!
While you do NOTHING and keep betraying your land and faith to those filthy muslims! You betray the Church of God, now, in the time of need, when Bogumil heretics plague the land, and when we should be UNITED!
" - As the Pope began shouting in his rage, the door behind the two clergymen was quietly opened, and four guards came inside.

After a short pause, the Pope looked up, and began to speak, this time in a calm tone.
"O, Forgive me my Lord, for I have sinned, and I will sin, in order to solidify your Church and your Glory! Guards! Take these clergymen away from me, into prison!

Let it be known to all the world that any member of the clerus who openly sympathizes with these so called "original" catholics, is excommunicated from the Church!

A messenger brought a letter to the Pope, in which His Holiness read about the new, Orthodox Church. He opened his mouth, but no words came... He grasped his heart, and collapsed. The messenger burst out of the room crying in panic:

"The Pope! The Pope! His Holiness...
The Pope is dead!

While at his excursion in Graz, a messenger, clearly with a frantic and almost wild look in his eyes, his forehead beading with sweat, informs Emperor Nekolai.

"Master, master! I have....just received word...", he takes a long, deep, sorrowful sigh, "The Pope has died!"

Nekolai's face immediately paled. His lip quivers, and just had enough willpower to say,

"Take me to Rome. NOW! Prepare my carriage, as quickly as possible!" Inform the rest of my Empire!

Basil I

“Your Holiness,” said the captain of the Papal army, intruding on the Pope’s thoughts.  “Forgive me, but I felt I must inform you immediately.  Cardinal Lysander has been sighted in Constantinople.”

“He yet lives?”

“So rumor holds.  I have been informed that he has been made Patriarch of Athens and Alexandria. He would be moving soon to return to Athens. We could contrive a force to intercept him and drag him before you in chains.”  Basil looked upon the captain, then shook his head.

“This is not our wish.”  Basil sat behind his desk and quickly penned a letter.  “This is to be delivered into Lysander’s hands.”

The junior priest dutifully completed his preparations for the day. He always felt so honored every day as he prepared things for His Holiness. Humble, too, though that had not been the case initially. He was from one of the great families of the Romagna and there were few among his fellows who could have rivaled his piety. He had considered it his due to be selected for such an office when Basil I had selected him.

That changed. Early in his tenure, he had heard another priest discussing thoughts that were clearly heretical. He immediately came to the Pope to denounce the other priest. He had expected the other priest to be punished. Instead, Basil I engaged the man in a debate that lasted throughout the night. When asked about it, Basil simply answered with that strange little smile of his “there is no place for a sword in a battle of minds.”

Basil I had that way about him. That quiet humility, the patience of Christ, the open ear. The junior priest had learned much of Christianity by studying directly at the hand of the Pope as he served him his meals.

On this morning, the priest entered His Holiness’s sleeping chamber. He set the tray with a wine and cheese on the table next to the bed, then made his way to the window. He opened the curtains to let the light of the day in.

“Good morning, Your Holiness. Another day in God’s- AHHHHH!” The priest gave a scream as he turned to the bed. The Pope was gone. His sleeping robe lay on the bed exactly as the Pope did each night. But he was not in them. The priest fell to his knees and began praying. He remained in prayer as the guards arrived.

“What has happened here?” questioned one of the guards. “Where is His Holiness?”

“Can you not see? He has been called to God, body and soul. He has been summoned to heaven by the Living God to serve as an example to all man.” Several of the guards crossed themselves.

“If this is true, then we will know the truth of it. Secure Roma. If this is true, we will be beset by religious fanatics. If not, we may yet find the perpetrators of a heinous act. Go! Quickly!”

"Was your day any good my master ?"

Benoit opened an eye and looked at the man in robe standing before him, at the other side of the desk. He must have fell asleep after he came back from his nomination. He refused to take room in the papal lodge, prefering for now his cardinal palace that he know and have already secured.

"Very much so Geralt, thanks for asking." He answered with a smile to the monk. Geralt was his secretary, which mean he is as much as a servant, an assistant, an advisor and a trusted friend. He too was formed in Aurillac where is mastery of the trivium earned him the, hard to obtain, praises of his teachers. Benoit decided to took the boy with him and to teach him the greek and the hebrew. For now, the cardinal feels like he was doing a fine job with the monk. Maybe one day he will be abbay, bishop or, who knows ? Cardinal.

"Do I guess we should now call you "Vice-chancellor" of the Church ?"

"Indeed. But do you understand what it mean ?"

" I think so my lords. Should I bring my ink and scrolls ?"

"Yes, we'll need it. Send letters to our bishops and deacons in the Latium, as a start. Tell them to organize assemblies of peace in their lands. Tell them to choose a place, a hill, a house, something to their liking, and to bring their folks there. The merchants, the peasants, the knights, as much peoples as possible. Tell them to organize such conciles in advance, so their outcome are fixed. The lords, the merchants, everyone present, will pledge to respect the Peace of God as explained, to protect the goods of the poors, of the churches, of the traders and thoses who don't will be excommunicated. But the latium will only be the first step. Once it is done, we will spread it to the rest of Italy, of Europe... but one thing at a time. Once the movement is strong enough, we shall send letters to the monasteries, to the abbots. We will tell them to accept the reforms of Cluny. Thoses who don't will be forced to elect new abbots from France or the Holy Land if we have a shortage of reformists. And if they persist in their sins, then we shall hit them with the anathem and seize their lands to give to less unruly, more loyal children of the Church."

Geralt took place behind his desk and prepared to write down, in proper latin, what his master just told him. Benoit dictated more precisely his thoughts and once he was satisfied of the result, Geralt leaved the room to prepare the other copies and their sending.

Once alone, Geralt took time to think, let his thoughts go their way. He took a scroll of his own, some ink, a pen and started writing the first drift of something, a guide to understand his plan, his view for the futur of christiandom and of the world...

And far later that day, when the sun settled down, riders left Rome in all direction with, in their packages, letters marked with the seal of the Vice-Chancellery.

Benoit entered the room, one of the many crypts under the Eternal City. Inside, there already was Xavier and another man, a priest, waiting around something covered by a white drape.

The Vice-chancellor looked at the inform mass, in silent. Not finding the words, he just made a sign of his hand and Xavier took away the shroud.

It was a skeleton, perfectly white, wrapped in tissues that once were magnificents robes, but now had been eaten by worms and covered of moistures. But more importantly, at his finger, there was the last object left to give away the identity of the men.

The Ring of St Paul.

"The locals had already put him in a communal grave, with the others sailors. Of course they took away all that was of any value and we had to retake it -he pointed at the ring- by violence. The only reason we knew is because rumours came about a peasant boasting about being in possession of the "Pope's ring". When they finally show us where the grave was, it had been weeks and we recognized him only because of his robe. We boiled the flesh away and kept only the bones, because it was impossible to transport him otherwise."

Benoit came closer to the skeleton and looked at it in his "eyes". "Did youn find anything else ?". Xavier shaked his head. "No. Everything had been taken away, be it by the locals or the sea." Benoit noded. His eyes then returned to the Ring. His hand slowly came near it and, after a bit of hesitation, he take it away and look at it in the palm of his hand.

"Summon the Cardinals, prepare the scribes." Ordered Benoit. "Prepare an official version of the story, and the elections."

"And for Christ's sake, did anyone gave him the last sacrament ? Call a Deacon here ! Do you really want a Pope rotting in the Purgatory ?"
