Favorite/Preferred Musical Genre?
Music Discussion
The Music Thread
For OOC music discussion. Share your musical tastes, find new music, make friends, make enemies, and talk about new records or killer concerts/gigs. Anything musical is welcomed. If you play or admire an instrument, be it guitar, drum, keyboard, brass, woodwind, hurdy-gurdy, or etc, discussion about any instrument is also part of this thread.
Main rule is: do not bash people because they enjoy genres other than your favorite genre. You can describe why you dislike a certain genre, and your opinion on it, provided that you do not aim your comments at an individual or group of people. Let's keep things civilized, this may be a Medieval-era RP group, but there's no excuse for barbaric behavior.
Feel free to join in! You can start by listing your favorite bands/groups/artists, or your favorite genres, or an experience you had with music.
Nothing else to say,

Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart, one of the most interesting characters in music history. Definitely look him up if you're interested.

Re: Music Discussion
Well, Captain Beefheart is definitely interesting, for sure, just not my kind of music.
I won't post any links, unless people are interesting, but I'm a huge fan of metal. Most kinds, from TRVE KVLT black metal to symphonic metal to brutal death metal to folk metal to traditional heavy metal. I also like hard rock/rock, but I'm more of a metalhead than a rocker. Some of my most-listened-to bands at the moment are Аркона, Horytnica, Amon Amarth, Decapitated, and Epica. Verdunkeln is pretty good too. But I like many others, those are just the ones I've been listening to the most lately.
I've gone to several concerts, I like going to concerts. I've seen Avenged Sevenfold, Nightwish, Sabaton, Deftones, and Delain live, and many local bands. I have a VIP ticket to an Epica concert later this month, as well as tickets to a Black Sabbath concert, also later this month. I have about..60-70 CDs in my constantly-expanding collection. Not as many band shirts, I'll have to start working on that.
I also play guitar, I own three amplifiers (only one's a full-on "real" tube amp that can be used for gigs), two electric guitars and one acoustic guitar. I also own a small beginner's accordion (that I don't really know how to play). I'm also currently working on a solo folk death metal solo project, hoping to have a demo done by this coming summer. Or at least have a few song ideas recorded.

Re: Music Discussion
Have you tried Van Canto? Majority of their music is heroic metal a capella. It works strangely well and some of it is really hardcore. I'm also fond of 3 Inches of Blood (mostly because of "Destroy the Orcs").Polska wrote:Well, Captain Beefheart is definitely interesting, for sure, just not my kind of music.

@Polska Beefheart wouldn't be my go to either. Just a crazy guy, practically held his band hostage to finish a record. A friend of his said "The environment in that house was positively Manson-esque."
Also, keep us up to date on that demo, I'd be happy to support it.

Re: Music Discussion
When speaking of metal, I just love "The Summoning". They write folk-metal music themed on Lord of the Rings.
Plus Metsatöll is a cool estonian metal band, I love them too. I'm all up for metal aswell.

Re: Music Discussion
Also, Manowar. They have an album in tribute to Odin. It is amazing. "Gods of War" is probably one of my favorite albums of all time.

Re: Music Discussion
Okay, so I listened to Van Canto. It was kinda difficult to not laugh...these guys actually make guitar riffs with their voices. They certainly have vocal talent, but the lyrics and actual vocals are really cheesy, I don't see myself being a fan, not my thing. I'll stick with my heavily distorted guitars.
I like Warriors of the World United. But there's much more glory and epicness in the power metal genre than just Manowar...
Behold, the greatest power metal song ever written:

I'll have to check out that Estonian band for sure, that sort of stuff is my thingVarasd wrote:When speaking of metal, I just love "The Summoning". They write folk-metal music themed on Lord of the Rings.

Also, about my demo, it's going to be VERY rough. I'm the only one working on it. That sounds okay, until you realize I can't sing (I have a decent death growl though), I'll need to use a simple drum machine, I can't play accordion but that's going to get thrown in there, the bass will be played through a cheap guitar practice amp, and the guitar will be just about the only thing to actually stand out and sound good.
Everything will still be in time and in key (except my vocals on that last one, but with a death growl it shouldn't be too obvious. It's the clean parts I'm worried about).

Re: Music Discussion
I was scouring and searching for Polish folk metal pretty heavily recently (at this rate I could join the CIA). I found great Polish and Russian folk bands, but no folk metal. And then, when I was ready to give up, I found Othalan. They formed in 2013, released an EP and a single (though digitally, no physical copies, at least none that I'm aware of). They're pretty young from what I can tell, and they make their music independently. No fancy labels here, this is all them.
Here's a YouTube link to one of my favorites (bass heavy, headphones or good speakers recommended):
Here's a link to their BandCamp (where you can find their music for free/name your price):
http://othalan.bandcamp.com/
I sent them a message via Facebook, they're very nice and fun to talk to. They seemed to be excited to hear that someone across the world found their music and enjoyed it. They also told me their debut LP will be coming out soon as well. Please, support these people, give them some cash for their work, they deserve it.

Re: Music Discussion
Rock 'n' Metal all the way! \m/
Of course I like almost every genre of music there is, except most Country and a good deal of modern Pop.
Fav genres include Rock, Metal, Reggae, Blues, and Hip Hop, as well as most of their respective subgenres (especially the ones that cross genres).

Is that supposed to be a clever pun/joke? Because if so that's hilarious.
