Video Games Discussion
Since we've got a music discussion thread, and have occasionally - albeit somewhat briefly - talked about video games, I figured perhaps we should have a thread for discussing them. So, here is a thread just for that. Feel free to talk about anything involving video games; what ones you like, stories from them, etc.
I'll start off with a little story from Crusader Kings 2:
So, I had been playing in Ireland (I was still kind of a scrub at the game) and had formed an empire encompassing Ireland and most of England, and was in the process of slowly taking over scotland. My Emperor had an heir, who was married. Well, it turned out the Emperor kind of liked his sons wife and decided to make a move on her. It worked, and the two had some sex. A baby was born of this union, but the heir thought it was his son, and the truth was never discovered.
Fast forward some years later, when the previous emperor had died, and his heir now sat on the throne. The secret bastard child of the last emperor, thought to be the son of the current one, was now married and had a wife. Well, it turned out the Emperor kind of liked his sons wife and decided to make a move on her. It worked, and the two had sex. And low and behold: A baby was born. But, once again, the son thought it was his! No one was ever the wiser. For a second time the heir of the current heir was actually the son of the current emperor.
I hope I was able to explain that properly without having to create a set of complex diagrams to show it all

So, what you are saying is that the direct line of succession will be maintained with the exception of the brief hiccup in the middle there. Nice.
Currently doing a campaign, starting as the Chieftain of Dublin and am currently the Tribal King of Alba and Eire (I acquired Alba first, then finished consolidating Eire). I am still trying to fully consolidate Alba beneath my rule, including breaking the remaining vassal chieftains and taking the counties still under Northumbrian control. My plans going forward are to eventually convert into a merchant republic and consolidate Britannia and Brittany into a great republic. Once I've assembled that, I'll see where I want to go from there.

I tried playing as a nomadic tengri kingdom... It's all good until the mongols come, because they're almost undefeatable.
But raiding is so much fun! I've raided Constantinople once, took the Emperor's heir as hostage. Then, the heir was raised by one of my high piety court members, and alas! He converted to Tengrism. When his father died, I've released him, and now the whole of the Byzantine empire had the state religion of Tengrism.
I did the same to Hungary, Poland, Muscowy, Novgorod, and even a bavarian duchy.
Did the same thing with vikings too, I've established my holding in Sicily, and then kidnapped and raised heirs, basically made half the Mediterrean viking pagans.

Damnit! Then we'll need to wait until the mongol hordes arrive and crush him. Wait... he IS the mongol horde! We're doomed.

it is easy to become comfortable with the enemy you know, our familiar foes. But to discount the menaces that lurk beyond the known world is to risk a rude awakening that can become a nightmare...

Re: Video Games Discussion
Just came into my mind, that Crusader Kings 2 save files are convertible to Europe Universalis IV. I've once lead the Hungarian Kingdom, coming from a small tribal chief (count, rank), to a Kingdom, overtaking it, expanding it, and then colonising North-Africa and conquering the Balkans and Middle-Europe with it in EUIV.
I've read that you can convert the saves to Victoria aswell, but when I've tried that game, it just seemed immensely complicated. Did any of you play Victoria?

Re: Video Games Discussion
With strategy games, there is an axis. At one side is complete simplicity, which is not very fun you might play for a while as a casual game. On the other is so horribly complicated it is effectively unplayable and you just toss in the bin. Somewhere there is a perfect balance point.
When they were making Vic, they blew past that balance point on their way to complicated, realized what they had done and decided in for a penny in for pound.

I have Vic...haven't played much of it because I still don't quite know entirely what I'm doing, but I've never touched converting from EUIV to Vic...

There are rumors of a VicIII in development which will have a game converter along with HOI4 so you can go CKII⇒EUIV⇒VicIII⇒HOI4. I've also seen a couple about a EU:RII or the development of a new series for antiquity, though I'm not sure about any of those with their confirmed work on HOI4, Stellaris and continued CKII and EUIV development.

Anybody here ever play Colonization or the Civ IV remake? I've been feeling like getting back into that, good fun.

That would be cool, leading a nation for about 2500 years!

Just got back into playing skyrim, and man, some of the armors make me cry inside.

That's why I modded skyrim until it they were gone!
Re: Video Games Discussion
That's what I plan to do, mod away all the sillyness.
There is a really nice mod which replaces all the imperial armor with proper Roman armor, and it's amazing.

I mostly went for full survival realism. A portable tent/bedroll, making campfires, cooking, freezing temperature, hunger and thirst, and if you get wet you can catch a cold, the rain can make your clothes wet, etc.
No fast travel either.
It made the whole "nordic wildlands" experience much better imo. Though becoming a werewolf makes it easier because then you could eat raw meat.
So I've played as an "ex-legionnarie" hunter/archer. It was good!

I've used that mod. It vastly improves the imperial's armor.

Something like that sounds like it would be quite fun. I played with the frostfall mod once, I remember that walking up to meet the greybeards required me camping quite a few times, under little rocky overhangs and stuff. It was fun.

Re: Video Games Discussion
My game in Skyrim has gone quite well recently. I have a mod which adds in Paladin armor, based off of the knights of the nine from previous games. To get it I had to go on a pilgrimage which took me across the whole of Skyrim...multiple times.
Finally, after going to lots of shrines and completing some trials, I got the armor!
It was hard to give up my steel plate, but...
Sadly, I had to cheat a little and disable Frostfall, since one shrine the mod adds is under the ocean in the coldest region in the game, so going down there without turning that off would not have worked out well.

Re: Video Games Discussion
I think if you stack up enough water breathing and cold resistance potions, plus you leave a fire and some warm clothes on the surface, you could do it. I remember I dived down to a ship wreck once like that.
The armor's nice though.

I know right? Have you played it with the Anno Domni 1400 (I forgot the exact number) mod?
