Grand Joust in Jerusalem: RP and Result Thread

Post by House of Judah on Mon May 30, 2016 7:18 am

His Royal Majesty, Benyamin ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah, as decreed by the Almighty, King of Judeans, Lord of Jerusalem and All Israel and Syria, Defender of the Temple, has declared that in celebration of his birthday, he shall organize a festival in Jerusalem. The festival shall include entertainments of many sorts to include street performers and a grand ball. Of particular import and prestige shall be the jousting tournament, a sport imported to Judea by the Christian knights of the Nazorean Guard which serve the king and protect Christian pilgrims and holy sites in the Holy Land. Messengers have been sent throughout the known world to notify all of the King’s Joust in hopes of luring the very best horsemen to the competition.

The rules of the joust shall be thusly:

  • Each knight who shall participate in the joust shall provide for his armor and his horse, and his squire shall provide the registrar with his name and the name of his house and the name of his horse and the blazon for his arms and all other informations the registrar shall keep.
  • And each person regardless of higher or lower birth who shall come to observe the joust shall provide the registrar with his or her name and the name of his or her house if he or she should have one and all other informations the registrar shall keep.
  • And each knight shall be tested against each of the other knights who shall contest the joust.
  • And when it shall come to judge between two knights, then they shall have a bout and ride five courses against each other.
  • And if during a course a knight shall break his lance upon his opponent, then it shall be recorded.
  • And if during a course a knight shall break his lance upon his opponent’s helm, then it shall be recorded as though he had broken two lances upon his opponent.
  • And if during a course a knight shall unhorse his opponent, then it shall be recorded as though he had broken three lances upon his opponent and the bout shall be at an end, even if the knights shall not yet have ridden five courses against each other.
  • And whichever knight shall have broken more lances upon his opponent shall be the victor and the other defeated.
  • But if they shall have broken a like number of lances upon each other then it shall be a draw between them unless one shall have unhorsed the other and then he who unhorsed his opponent shall be the victor and the other defeated.
  • And if at the end of a bout a knight shall draw with his opponent he shall be granted one flag.
  • And if at the end of a bout a knight shall defeat his opponent he shall be granted three flags.
  • And if at the end of a bout a knight shall have unhorsed his opponent he shall be granted one flag.
  • And when it shall come to rank the knights amongst each other the knight who shall have the greatest number of flags shall be first and next greatest shall be second and so on until the knight with the fewest shall be the least of them.
  • And if knights shall have like numbers of flags then the knight who shall have broken the greatest number of lances upon his opponents shall be first among them.
  • And if knights shall have like numbers of flags and have broken like numbers lances upon his opponents then the knight who shall have unhorsed the greatest number of his opponents shall be the first among them.
  • And if knights shall have like numbers of flags and have broken like numbers of lances upon his opponents and have unhorsed like numbers of his opponents but one shall have defeated the other then the knight who shall have defeated the other shall be first among them.
  • And if knights shall in all other ways be found to be equals, then they shall draw lots between them to determine their rankings.
  • And should one of the knights find quarrel with his ranking by the lot then he shall have the right to challenge one who has been ranked above him by the lots to a series of courses until one shall have the advantage of the other.
  • And when the knights shall have been ranked, the first and second among them shall test against each other in a final bout.
  • And if at the end of the final bout the knights shall draw with one another then they shall ride further courses until one shall have the advantage over the other, and the knight who shall have the advantage shall be declared the winner and champion of the Grand Joust.

LET THE JOUST BEGIN!

Plainly Spoken:
Plainly spoken

  • Each joust will consist of five tilts.
  • Breaking a lance on your opponent is worth one ‘lance’
  • Breaking a lance on the helm is worth two ‘lances’
  • Unhorsing your opponent is worth three ‘lances’ and ends the match, regardless of how many tilts have been ridden
  • Whoever has the most ‘lances’ wins the joust
  • If the riders have the same number of ‘lances’ the riders tie unless one unhorsed the other, in which case the guy who unhorsed the other wins the match
  • A tie earns one ‘flag’
  • A victory earns three ‘flags’
  • Unhorsing your opponent earns one ‘flag’
  • To rank the riders, ‘flags’ take precedence over total ‘lances’ over total unhorsings over head-2-head over random drawing.
  • If you are ranked lower as a result of a random drawing, you can challenge the guy above you to a sudden-death series of tilts.
  • The top two riders ride a final match against each other, with sudden-death tie breakers in the event of draw.

Other Information:

  • This is a character RP with sport scorinating aspects. The point is the RP. To encourage RPing, and quality RPing, I will assign bonuses for RPing which will help you during a match. These bonuses will be awarded for making IC posts with your jouster and RPing with the other players. A round of RP may run up to the moment before the meeting of lances and the new round of RP can continue from that endpoint.
  • There will be injuries, this will be out of your hands, and they will negatively impact you. Injuries can build up during the match. This is handled by my scorinator.
  • RP Bonus and Injury Penalty will decay at a rate of 50% between bouts. What this means is if you received 10 points for your RP Bonus in one round, for the next round that 10 points will become 5 points, then 2.5, then 1.25, and so on. This is to encourage continuous RP. The injury penalty works the same way.
  • Your bonus as applied in the scorinator is given by the formula BONUS=RP-INJURY.
  • To give people a chance to RP, I will score the matches every other day at ~23:00 PST ( UTC-8 ). The commencement of scoring will be announced by me posting a reply in this thread reading “CUTOFF”, at which point RP will be suspended briefly while I score matches. Once they have been scored, I will edit the results into the CUTOFF post, as well as the updated rankings. Once the update has been posted, you will be free to continue RPing.
  • Standard RP rules apply here. This thread is for results and RPing. All OOC discussion shall be carried out in the OOC Thread.

Ari ben Yitzchak

The streets of Jerusalem were adorned in colorful flags. The shuk was bustling with activity, more so than typical due to the many people who had come to Jerusalem for the festival. The Nazorean Hospital was so full they had to turn away some. A tent city had grown around the ancient and resurrected hippodrome.

Suddenly, the sea of people parted as if Moshe himself had commanded them to part and a cheer rose up from the crowd as the knights came into view. From across the known world, horsemen had arrived to test themselves in King Yitzchak’s arena.

Easily, the most recognized of them was Prince Ari ben Yitzchak, the King’s second son and Marshal of the Kingdom’s armies. He rode atop his black horse, Ra’amel, soaking in the cheers of the crowd. He even received accolades from the Nazoreans, though their loyalties lay obviously with their own champion, Aloys de Narbonnes.

The knights paraded through the streets until they arrived at the hippodrome, where they were given chance to rest the horses and greet one another. Ari grinned at his old friend.

“You will be a legend, Aloys. You will forever be known as the father of jousting in the Holy Land.” Aloys laughed.

“Come, Ari. Let us meet our competition.” The two laughed and swaggered forth to meet the others participating in the King’s joust.

Marcus Oseolo

The son of the Count has arrived with his best friends to Jerusalem. Their first journey was to see the hill on which Jesus Christ was crucified and then they made their ways to the place of the joust. As Marcus did not care much about fancy etiquettes and such he didn't ask his servant to yell his name and title in advance, he just went into the crowd.

Bion
Introducing Sir Karpos of the House, Kyrillos. The Lord of Aegina, and Bulwark of the Achaeans.

Karpos
Karpos stood silently, a colossus of a man, he looked as though he were ready to begin a journey to recover the golden fleece.
He was imposing over the man giving his introduction. Once he believed Bion's speech was concluded, he put on his heaume.
Bion would be right there, dressing Karpos' armor and making sure his weapons were in order.

Kadir of Sari

The Persians entered quickly following the Greeks. While a small procession ultimately, Kadir of Sari and his entourage galloped through the city gates and straight to an upscale brothel. After weeks of riding, Kadir was quite lonely and was a firm believer in enjoying a woman's company before a fight. Besides, the foreigners cared only for royal houses and his "lack" of one would have made his formal introduction less than important.

Aloys de Narbonnes

The time had come for his first joust. Aloys mounted his horse, Aude, as his herald announced him.

“Good people, good people. Today it is my privilege to introduce to you a knight equal and heir to the Nine Worthies. A knight of the noble lineage of Karolus Magnus1. As a child he amazed our King by standing between a man four times his size and would be victim of his savage lust. When raiders flouted the edicts of our King protecting Christian pilgrims, he earned glory as he led a force of Christian knights to put an end to the attacks. The very Pope in Rome turns to him as a guide to Christianity. Here he is, Captain of Nazoreans, Hero of Maidens, Sir Aloys de Narbonnes!”

Aloys rechecked his gauntlet, then reached down and his squire handed him his lance. He steeled himself for the bout. Aloys looked across at his Varasdan opponent, Sir Marcus. The flag dropped and Aloys spurred Aude forward. He felt the hooves thunder beneath him. The two knights drew closer… closer…

Aloys lowered his lance and brought it to bear on his opponent. This was it. The moment of glory. The moment of impact.

Aloys de Narbonnes

The force of the blow reverberated up his arm as his lance shattered on Sir Marcus’s body. He felt the blow across his chest from Sir Marcus’s lance. It was over in an instant, then both riders passed through an explosion of wood. The crowd cheered. Aloys felt the exhilaration. He pulled his horse around and made ready for the next pass.

“Sir Marcus and Sir Aloys have each broken a lance on each other’s body,” announced the herald. “The joust continues.” Again the horns sounded, again the flag dropped, again Aloys spurred his horse forward. He charged along the list down the middle of the hippodrome.

“One more time, Aude, one more time.” He brought his lance down and across. Again he felt the hits.

It was different this time. He felt pain blossom through his chest. He heard a sound behind him but he couldn’t be sure what it was. He pulled on the reins of his horse and came to a stop.

“I can’t breathe,” he wheezed to his squire. His breath was ragged. He looked back over his shoulder as his squire helped him from his horse and saw Sir Marcus on the ground.

“Fetch the physician!” his squire called. “Congratulations, Sir. You’ve won your first bout.” The squire helped pull Sir Aloys’s armor from his body as the Nazorean physician came over. The physician began feeling Sir Aloys’s chest. Somewhere behind them they could hear the herald calling out the results.

“Sir Marcus broke a lance on Sir Aloys, Sir Aloys has unhorsed Sir Marcus. The joust is ended, Sir Aloys has won four lances to two and has unhorsed his opponent for four flags!” The audience roared with cheers for the match as four small triangular flags had their poles fitted into slots over a large painted wooden shield bearing Aloys’s arms. The physician completed his inspection of Aloys.

“You’ve a couple cracked ribs,” the physician said.

“Will it prevent me from completing the tournament?” Aloys asked as the physician pulled out some bandaging and began binding Aloys’s chest.

“I figured you would ask something like that. I’d prefer you didn’t, but you can continue to compete. Try not to disturb these bandages, if you please.”

“Good, I want a chance to ride against my frater sine sanguine1 before the competition is at an end,” said Prince Ari ben Yitzchak as he walked over. “Well done, Aloys.” The two men clasped each other’s forearms.

“Go out there and amaze your people, Ari,” Aloys said. “Show that Persian what for.” He looked to his squire. “Go and get me word of Sir Marcus. I would know of his health after that blow.”

1brother without blood

Ari ben Yitzchak

Ari felt the determination. He couldn’t just let Aloys out shine him completely. He needed to match his old friend. He brought his lance down on Kadir of Sari. A shock went through his arm as his lance hit the other man. The expected to the other side didn’t happen. He looked back over his shoulder and saw the Persians lance unbroken.

“Ha ha,” he laughed as he reached the other end and re-equipped. “Did you see that?”

“Prince Ari broke his lance on Sir Kadir, Sir Kadir’s lance is unbroken. The joust continues.” Ari pulled his horse and re-aligned on the list. The flag dropped again and Ari spurred his horse again. Ra’amel was true to his name and thundered beneath him. He brought his lance down as the two rider’s drew near. The shock reverberated through his arm and a great shout went up from the crowd.

“Prince Ari broke his lance on Sir Kadir’s helm, Sir Kadir’s lance is unbroken. The joust continues.”

“I hit him in the head?!” Ari exclaimed, barely believing it as the herald. “I hit him in the head!” He again re-equipped and turned to face his opponent. At the flags drop they charged once more at one another. This time he felt the shock on both sides as his opponent scored a hit as he did as well.

“Prince Ari and Sir Kadir have each broken a lance on each other’s body. The joust continues.” The two jousters rode their next course. Ari once more broke his lance on his opponent, and though Sir Kadir hit him his lance remained unbroken. In their final pass, Prince Ari once more broke his lance on Sir Kadir’s helm.

“Prince Ari broke his lance on Sir Kadir’s helm, Sir Kadir’s lance is unbroken. The joust is ended, Prince Ari has won seven lances to one for three flags!” The audience roared with cheers as their prince won his bout. Ari pulled Ra’amel around and rode forward to meet Sir Kadir in the center of the hippodrome. He clasped the other man’s fore arm.

“You rode well, you’ll hit harder next time, I’m sure of it.”

Ty Kelderssen

"By the gods of Marsen and Earle! My head!"

Ty Kelderssen was just over six feet tall and quite stocky. He currently lay on a makeshift bed. He had arraigned to stay in a house with a local family. Their home was modest, tucked away into one of the more quiet areas of the city. They offered Ty and Franton two beds and two meals a day.

The Vannish knight had paid fairly in coinage, if not tipped quite well. It didn't put the family out too much to make room for these strangers. Surely they must have heard something about the competition. It might have been an honor to host such travelers.

A daughter of about 20 years old was applying a bandage to a large bruise Kelderssen had earned on the joust's first course, on the side of his head.

Franton watched from the corner, a rather calm pleasant look was his expression.

"Cracked you right a good one, ey Sir?"

Kelderssen could taste the sarcasm in Franton's voice. That sick creature was enjoying Ty's pain.

"Franton, you devil! You know it's true."

Ty felt like his head was pounding. He felt dizzy, almost a little sick. He hoped his head would clear up before the next match, if not sooner... Much sooner.

"I saw diagonally for that whole match", Ty said. "I just went off instincts, and trusted that Thurr would run true."

Thurr was Ty's medium-sized, but quick, fjord horse. He was a reddish-tan color and seemed quite calm in temperament. He stood outside the family home, tied to a hitching post in the yard, away from the road.

"You did quite well to earn some points", Franton replied. The squire borrowed one of the Kelderssen family's other Fjord horses, which was tied up next to Thurr. Franton was still working his way up to the level where he could own his own horse.

The woman tied the bandage and pulled to cinch it tight.

"Bloody Marsen!" He yelled the name of an Old Vannish god as the tight pull put a bit too much pressure on his head.

Unhorsed!

Post by Jormark on Fri Jun 03, 2016 1:17 am

Baron-Prince Magnus Henry

Magnus-Henry tugged at his visor nervously. He mounted his dark grey horse and his brother Gnarls watched with anticipation.

Karpos was literally twice the size of Magnus. Magnus was strong, but he was only 5'4. Karpos towered over him. Even his little brother Gnarls was taller, yet not as strong. Gnarls was 6'3. This did not dishearten Magnus.

He couched his lance and spread into the fray. He closed his eyes. Then he felt a blow to his face and one of his teeth loosened. He thought he was about to fall off. The pain was coursing through his head. He opened his eyes. He could barely see through the visor. He squinted...

He saw the horse of Karpos. He squinted and he could not see him on his horse. His ears were ringing and he couldn't hear a thing. He tried to pull the visor up, but it was too deformed.

He suddenly pulled the helmet off. The ringing stopped. It was replaced with cheering. He saw he had knocked Karpos off of his horse.

The crowds cheered!

It felt good. It was VICTORY!

Kadir of Sari

"You honor me, sir," the Persian replied graciously through his helm. "Blows well struck."

He laughed, pointing at his visibly dented face-guard. Kadir was relieved the younger man had not seen his face, for he was possibly quite bloodied. No matter, it was Kadir's pride that was wounded the most.

Once the young prince had departed and Kadir had ridden off the track, he dismounted his horse and shook his head. All of his years of military training and noble Persian horsemanship had done him precious little. While he managed to survive the joust (a feat in its own right for a man who came from a culture without such a sport), Kadir was nonetheless unimpressed with his own skill set.

When he finally removed his helm, he was pleased to be blessed still with sight and a quick inspection revealed his face was still as handsome as he remembered. Good, he thought, i can still bring some glory to my home and people. He spat out some blood and wiped his face clean. Soon enough he would ride again.

"You there? Boy," He barked at a stable boy. "Fetch me some wine, will you? I have need of some distraction from this pain."

Karpos

Karpos had to take a moment to regain himself. Bion had rushed over to the knight, chesnut destrier in tow. Bion attempted to help the knight up, but Karpos shook the squire off of him, rather picking himself up with the help of his shattered blue and gold lance.

Karpos walked to Magnus, a limp in his left leg and spoke in Greek, never removing his heaume:
"You have done well, better than most would have. It has been too long since I was thrown from Desma." he finished, patting the destrier and dropping his lance at Magnus' feet.
Bion would translate to Latin when he sure the knight was finished.

Karpos walked off, now accepting Bion's help. The squire would see to tending to the injuries and mending any imperfections in the dented armour.

Baron Prince Magnus-Henry Sigmundson

Magnus walked to his brother Gnarls and put a hand on his shoulder. They walked to the smith to repair his helmet.

"That was a mighty blow!" Gnarls exclaimed.

"It doesn't look good. The armor cut under my left eye. It is going to bruise and be a black eye within one day."

Magnus wiped the blood from his face. He put a sack of ice and salt on his eye. He removed his armor and put it in a box full of sand and vinegar. A page swished it around, the most effective way to preserve plate armor and keep it from rusting.

"It will be polished for the next round. I am going to see a physician."

"Good, M'lord."

Magnus went to a physician to clean his eye.

Brother VS Brother

Post by Jormark on Sat Jun 04, 2016 10:35 pm

Gnarls Sigmundson, Magnus-Henry Sigmundson

Gnarls and Magnus got in their horses.

"Eh brother, we're going. I knew we would," said Magnus.

Gnarls rode over to the other side of the field. He put down his visor and was ready. When the time came, he knew it would be hard for him.

Magnus also knew it would be hard to hurt his brother.

Magnus rode into the fray when he approached his brother there was a collision. Then he blacked out.

Magnus woke up to his brother helping up.

"You did well little brother. You did well. I knew you had it in you."

Karpos

Karpos rode off to Bion and collected a banner from him, a purple vexillum with a golden Chi-Rho emblazoned. "For Constantinople! Down with the idolatrous church of Rome!" Karpos roared, removing his helm, showing his somewhat bloodied face to the crowd before riding out of the stade with Bion following after.

"Let them know that their faith is true, Bion. If it causes some dissent? So be it, I say." "I doubt anyway that these Lords of Iudaea will allow any but themselves to part from these lands as champion."

"If that is what you believe, then why have we made this journey?" Bion remarked.

Karpos smirked and raised the vexillum once again "This is why. I may not win the glory but if I can further a discord between the Orthodox and the Catholics? Well, that could certainly lead to more gold for us than just one paltry statue."

Gnarls Sigmundson, Magnus-Henry Sigmundson

"Ja Gnarls, we are giving these Hebreërs a run for their כֶּסֶף!"

"I would say. Jormark and Judea are the only ones making any progress!"

"That is true."

Ari ben Yitzchak & Aloys de Narbonnes

Ari and Aloys walked away from the lists, Aloys holding a bandage to the side of his head.

“Did you have ring my bell quite so many times?” Aloys asked.

“Well, I only barely won our bout. It was close. A proper end to a bout between the two best riders here.”

“That remains to be seen,” Aloys said moderately. Aloys shook his head. He looked around, then narrowed his eyes. “There’s that Karpos bastard. A Greek agitator, as if we didn’t have enough troubles.”

“Troublemakers. I have the Greek for my next match. I’ll make sure to put him on the dirt for you.”

“I’d be much obliged.” The two approached a group of Nazorean Guards and Ari passed Aloys off to his comrades. “Where are you off to, Ari?”

“Gambling house. I put ten shekels on the Persian. I’m going to collect my winnings.”

“You walked into a gambling den? How is that not the talk of Jerusalem?”

“I do know how to hide my face,” Ari replied, then pulled his hood over his head. Aloys laughed and shook his head, then looked once more at the irritating Greek.

“Gotzon, keep an eye on Karpos. If he starts agitating, I want to know about it immediately.”

Re: Grand Joust in Jerusalem: RP and Result Thread

Post by Vannishlands on Tue Jun 07, 2016 2:27 am

Kelderssen and Franton had spent the past few days living in the house of the local family. Franton had been working the land and doing odd tasks around the homestead. Kelderssen would have liked to, but he injured his ribs after the second match.

He spent much of the day trying to recuperate, while flirting with the young woman who had taken the role as his nurse. He was a single man destined to an arranged marriage to a lady from another Royal Vannish House.

There weren't really any of the ladies his age he fancied in the Royal circles. Although he did have a few older, wealthier women he had made the acquaintance of. That was more of an effort to raise his own status and associate with a Higher House. The wealthy ladies were eager to exploit such ambitious young knights.

Kelderssen was destined to the Royal military class. It was a coveted spot in the nation. But from where he sat, he would love to be of one of the top Houses.

He'd be somewhere living the lap of luxury right now as opposed to here, surrounded by the heat getting over a concussion and a cracked rib.

Kelderssen managed to put together his best run at the last joust. He thought he should have his rib wrapped, but the woman forced him not to. It hurt a great deal when his opponent scored a hit. But Ty had dealt with pain before. He could keep going, that he proved to himself.

If nothing else, he was a fighter and he would slog it out, until he could no more. It looked like glory would not be found here, based on the standings. But he would still compete.

Franton, his squire, thought the whole thing was amusing. He often brought up the standings, even when Kelderssen would respond by yelling and telling him to shut his mouth. It was an interesting relationship they shared, but they were used to each other.

"You're going to be the end of me, Franton... You'll be the end of me."

"I know, sire...."

One day, Franton hoped to be in the spot that Ty was in, to earn a spot in his house and be a noble. He was one of the few Vannish who was studying the art of the joust. But as much as he looked up to Ty, he would make every effort to aggravate him.

Kelderssen knew Franton was joking around and Franton knew Ty was not being serious either.

One thing was becoming more serious. The girl was showing interest in Ty. He would have to figure things out, one way or another.

The knight cooked breakfast one morning for the family and they seemed fairly impressed.

Karpos

Karpos removed his helm and wiped the blood from his mouth. His plan, he thought, could still work. Himself, not knowing well enough to let sleeping dogs lie, got off of his horse and bellowed:

"The Lion of Judea is no greater than the Lion of Nemea! The Lion of Nemea too pawed at Heracles, wounded him.

People of the Church of Constantinople, overcoming this schism is our thirteenth labor, if realized, you too will be among the Immortals!

People of the Church of Rome, melt down your golden idols, your church cares more of finery than it does to see you with bread in your stomachs, the golden lion statue the victor will be rewarded is just one more idol whose gold could build homes, buy food, and make your lives greater.

Christians of the Holy Land all, the bounty of these lands are yours!"

Karpos would ride off, his squire in tow, quickly finding sanctuary to lie low until the next bout.

Ari ben Yitzchak & Aloys de Narbonnes

Ari removed his helm after his bout and touched a tender spot on his head. He pulled his hand back and looked at it. Only a small amount of blood. A small cut, nothing to be concerned with. He turned his horse around to ride out and grasp forearms with his opponent (as he had been doing during his previous matches) when Karpos began his rant.

“Agitator,” he scowled when the Greek finished, then spat on the ground and led his horse out of the hippodrome. He quickly found Aloys, who was getting a far larger cut on his head wrapped by the Nazorean physician.

“Aloys, send the Guard out into the Christian Quarter. Everywhere that a Christian goes in Jerusalem, I want them to see Nazoreans. I want them to know we are watching and if there are any troublemakers, they are to be arrested immediately. Do we know where Karpos is?”

“I’m afraid we lost him in the crowds,” Aloys responded.

“Damn. Find him. I would have words with the man.” Aloys raised his eyebrow.

“I think I know the sort of words you would have him. I doubt your father would approve of you abusing the man.”

“I won’t injure him unless suitably provoked. But you would be well served to worry less of what I would do to him and more of what your brethren might. The Christians here lean towards Rome and the Pope born of their stock. If they find him before our people…”

“True enough. I’ll see what I can do. And if we can’t find him before the next joust?”

“Then prevent him from leaving the hippodrome until I speak to him.”

“It will be as you command,” Aloys confirmed, then issued orders to his men as Ari relayed them to other soldiers under his command.

Kadir of Sari

"Fucking twice!" Kadir shouted frustratingly, once he and his horse were out of earshot.

He felt a warm phlegm coagulating in the back of his throat. Not soon after, he felt blood slowly falling from his nose and down his chin. He swore again, this time much more loudly. He had been hit in the face once more, yet this time it had brought a nasty pounding headache. Luckily, he would not have to ride with it - the match was over. He had lost.

"Well done, sir," Kadir congratulated his opponent and rode off.

His helmet and armor felt heavy; their thick metal plate sticking awkwardly to his sweaty frame. He wondered why these Christians fought in such impractical armor. Authenticity or not, danger or not, Kadir vowed then and there that his next match he would don his favored light Persian armor instead.

"More wine, boy!" the Persian bellowed to his attendant as he removed his helm. "Then fetch me one of those masked doctors!"

He grabbed the flask from the boy and downed it like a man dying of thirst. He was properly drunk by the time the doctor arrived to treat him. It was a good thing too because his nose was broken and would need to be reset.

"Well, get on with it," Kadir growled in his best attempt at the man's language.
